When beginning your dance journey just wear what you're comfortable in there is no need to buy lots of shoes/dancewear to start learning. Once find that you love dancing, then its the right time to start looking into buying some dance shoes. Always consult your teacher before purchasing any shoes or dance wear.

Children under 12 years (Juvenile)
Children's shoes are used for both Ballroom & Latin. Some cross over straps can be worn either wrapped around the foot or ankle.
Ladies shoes are used from the age of 12 years.
Heel heights vary from 2 inches to 2.75 inches high.
Ballroom shoes generally have a lower heel than Latin shoes.
They can come with various designs of straps or without.
Cuban - low to mid- height
Spanish - wider mid-height
Flared or straight - thinner mid-height to high

Character shoes along with Jazz shoes can be used as an alternative to Ballroom & Latin shoes. Make sure they have a suede sole!
When practicing you want to feel comfortable and be able to move freely. for example no jeans and no pencil/mini skirts.
Circle skirts, leggings, trousers or shorts.
There are strict rules when choosing what to wear for children under the age of 12 years please contact your teacher to discuss further.
When choosing a ballroom or Latin dress you can either have a dress made to measure either from a dance dress maker or from a website, please use someone who has been recommended as you don't want to be disappointed.

Ladies your skirt needs to be just above the knee or shorter to show the leg action of each dance.
Gentlemen you can wear black dance trousers & black or white shirt
Ballroom & Classical/Old time & sequence
Ladies your skirt needs to be a full circle, just above the ankle ballroom skirts are traditionally long but you can have them just below the knee.
Gentlemen you can wear black dance trousers & white shirt, you are allowed to wear smart black jumper or jumper vest over your shirt or dinner jacket. Tail suits are usually worn for open competitions.
